Board games achieved a high level of artistry with simple materials and construction: the beautiful gameboard of Spider's Web actually is a chromolithograph glued to the bottom of a plain cardboard box. Nineteenth-century schools immersed children in the classical literature of Greek mythology. Children would have recognized references to the story of Arachne, a beautiful maiden frightened by the jealous goddess Athena, who turned her into a spider perpetually spinning her web.
