"Man in the Moon" board game with 24 circular wooden playing pieces and a paper gameboard applied to the bottom half of a paper covered cardboard box with wooden aprons; board chromolithographed as a checkerboard showing the phases of the moon, surrounded by a floral border; box cover chromolithographed with a personified moon wearing red and white striped stockings, black tie shoes and a ruffled collar with red bow tie; box cover inscribed, "GAME/ of/ THE/ MAN/ IN THE/ MOON/ McLOUGHLIN BRO'S/ NEW YORK".

The famous McLoughlin Brothers' game Man in the Moon commands some of the highest prices in today's collectibles market. Players test their skill on a gleaming checkerboard decorated with alternating full and crescent moons while attempting to surround and capture their opponent's discs or "men." The competitor who succeeds in reducing his opponent to one man wins the game: the remaining player becomes the "Man in the Moon."
