John V. Lindsay (1921-2001) served as Mayor of New York City 1965 to 1972, during a tumultuous period of the city's history. Lindsay faced a long public transit strike, a teacher's strike, race riots, and huge municipal expenditures. He was unsuccessful in seeking the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972 and was an unsuccessful candidate for the U.S. Senate in 1980.
