Athletic silver medal with circular medal suspended from red, white and blue striped ribbon with pin back; image of a women with a flowing tunic and laurels in both hands standing above a wheel on obverse, ring of garland and sports equipment on reverse; inscribed "HOPPER FIELD, FREEPORT, TEXAS 1950" on pin; engraved "AMATEUR ATHLETIC UNION OF THE UNITED STATES MDCCLXXXVIII" on obverse; engraved "400 METER RELAY 1950" on reverse

This medal is one of many won by track athlete Dolores Dwyer (b. 1932) of New York City. Ms. Dwyer began her running career in 1946 when she entered a children's track meet in Central Park sponsored by the Parks Department. She trained with the German-American Athletic Club in Brooklyn from 1947 to 1953 and competed in many national championships, setting several records. She represented the U.S. in the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland.
