This token is the fifth version of the New York City subway token. The first was issued in 1953, followed by new versions in 1970, 1980, 1986, and this one in 1995. New York City was one of the last major transit systems to adopt an electronic fare system, which was finally set in motion with the first electronic turnstile and sale of MetroCards in 1994. The last subway tokens were sold on April 12, 2003.
