Description
Sterling silver struck medal with obverse showing clothed bust of Archbishop John M. Farley facing left within central roundel with ornate border, above -- dove symbolizing Holy Spirit, below -- cross with grape vines and ears of wheat; around central roundel are six busts of archbishops with their names in legend around border, separated by stylized crosses, clockwise: "ABP.M.CORRIGAN/ABP. J. HUGHES/B.P.CONNOLLY. O.P./BP.CONCANEN.O.P./ BP.J.DVBOIS/CARD.ABP.McCLOSKEY." Reverse shows Gothic-style cathedral building surrounded by ornate border with four oval medallions containing coats of arms and suspended upon laurel wreath; legend: "CENTENARY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE DIOCESE OF NEW YORK/1808 1908." Medal inset into red cloth-bound book-like case with gold-embossed inscriptions on face of cover: "TO.COMMEMORATE/THE.CENTENARY/CELEBRATION.OF/THE.FOUNDING.OF/THE.DIOCESE.OF/NEW YORK/1808-1908"; back of cover is embossed with the coat of arms of the Diocese of New York with the motto on scroll below: "NON.NOBIS.DOMINE."; inside cover is inscribed: "THIS.MEDAL.WAS.STRUCK/TO.COMMEMORATE.THE/ONE.
HUNDREDTH/ANNIVERSARY.OF/THE.FOVNDING.OF/THE.DIOCESE.OF/NEW YORK/John M. Farley/Abp. of N.Y. [hand-written]", front; and "THE.ACCOMPANYING.MEDAL./NO 12/IS.ONE.OF.A.SPECIAL.LIMITED/EDITION.OF.ONE.HUNDRED/ISSVED.BY.THE.AMERICAN.NUMISMATIC.SOCIETY/TO:", back.
