Copper-plated lead electrotype of the Preble naval medal with obverse showing uniformed bust of Edward Preble facing left with legend: "EDWARDO PREBLE DUCI STRENUO/COMITIA AMERICANA." Reverse shows naval battle scene with American ships firing at the walls of Tripoli; legend: "VINDICI COMMERCII AMERICANI"; inscription below exergual line: "ANTE TRIPOLI/MDCCCIV."

Commodore Edward Preble (1761-1807), who commanded the American fleet during the Barbary Wars in the Mediterranean, was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal by an 1805 Resolution of the United States Congress, in honor of his skill and bravery onboard the U.S.S. Constitution in the battle off Tripoli in 1804.
