This custard cup and cover are part of a 107 piece service of Chinese export porcelain purchased by the donor's great-great grandfather, Gerrit Huybert Van Wagenen (1753-1835), a hardware merchant at Beekman Slip in New York City. Gerrit purchased the service in 1816 for a dinner held for "all the Episcopal clergymen of New York except one." The N-YHS collection includes eight pieces of this service.
