Description
Gold struck medallion with obverse depicting female personification of Liberty clad in Grecian dress, with torch in her left hand and small winged statuette of Fame with laurel wreath in her right hand; inscription at left of field: ".FOUNDED./.NEW.YORK./.1907."; legend: ".THE.CIVIC.FORUM." Reverse shows American eagle within circular field at center, with legend beneath: "FOR.DISTINGUISHED.PUBLIC.SERVICE."; surrounding legend outside beaded border: ". ELIHU . ROOT . 1927 ./. CITIZEN ."

Elihu Root (1845-1937) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912. He served as Secretary of War under McKinley and Roosevelt (1899-1903) and as Secretary of State under Roosevelt (1905-1909). From 1909- 1915 he was a Republican Senator from New York.
