This shoe belonged to Adella Liebenow Wotherspoon as a baby, who was the last survivor of the General Slocum steamer disaster, which occurred on June 15, 1904 when the ship suddenly caught fire on the East River. Adella pulled the cord to unveil the monument at the dedication ceremony on June 15, 1905, which honored the 1,021 passengers who had perished in the disaster, including Adella's sisters, Anna and Helen, whose body was never recovered.
