Description
Small circular cup and distinct small circular lid; cup painted primarily in black and white with scene of western-style goddesses and has stylized strapwork border painted along exterior rim. Interior has small painted black orchid at bottom. Lid is painted in reds, greens, gold, and black, and has foliate border and frieze of bamboo, pine tree, and plum.

Marks
Lid has hallmarks painted along exterior of top written in Japanese characters, "Mikawauchi Tanaka Sei," which translates as "Made in Tanaka Workshop in Mikawachi area."
Gallery Label
Cup and lid are distinct pieces and are not a set. Scenes of lid are known as "three friends" motif, which symbolizes good luck. Cup appears to be type used for sake.
