Description
Rounded cast triangular souvenir ashtray from the Hudson-Fulton Celebration; chased medallion portrait of Henry Hudson in the center with an image of his ship the "Halve Maen" (Half Moon) above; the state shield of New York surrmounted by an eagle and the insignia of England in the corners; raised edge inscribed, "DISCOVERY * OF * THE/ HVDSON * RIVER * MDCIX/ TERCENTENNIAL;" signed by the artist along the bottom edge; manufacturer's stamp on the side.

Gallery Label
Henry Hudson dedicated his life to finding passage to China through North America. After two unsuccessful attempts, in the spring of 1609, he set sail with the backing of the Dutch East India Co. from Amsterdam on the "Half Moon." The threat of a muntiny forced him to seek shelter along the American coast. On Sept. 2, he dropped anchor in what became the lower bay of New York harbor. He then sailed up the Hudson river (which he named) to what became Albany. This ashtray commemorates his voyage.
