Cornelia F. Sherman was the only daughter of Isaac Sherman (1818-81), a lumber dealer and banker of New York and Buffalo. She married Bradley Martin (1841-1913) at the Church of the Messiah on January 26, 1869. Martin was a lawyer and businessman, and the couple rapidly became prominent in New York society. In 1897 they gave a historic masquerade ball at the Waldorf Hotel which was one of the most lavish ever given in the city.
