The Grateful Dead:Now Playing at the New-York Historical Society offers visitors a unique glimpse inside the world of an American cultural and musical phenomenon. In their thirty years together, the Grateful Dead forever altered the way in which popular music is performed, recorded, heard, marketed and shared. After incarnations as Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions and The Warlocks, founding members took the name Grateful Dead in 1965, a pivotal time in American history, when the sensibilities of the Beat generation coincided with the spirit of the burgeoning hippie movement. Representing a countercultural response to the surrounding social turmoil—the civil rights movement, Vietnam War protests, and the women's rights campaign—the Dead offered their loyal fans, the Deadheads, both continually evolving, boundary-crossing musical explorations and a sense of community that remain salient today. The Grateful Dead's unprecedented personal interaction with their fans has created a bond that other bands can only hope to approximate through social networking sites like Facebook, Flickr and Twitter. Through a wealth of original materials, the exhibition will explore the musical creativity and influence of the Grateful Dead, the sociological phenomenon of the Deadheads and the enduring impact of the Dead's pioneering approach to the music business. The Historical Society will celebrate Jerry Garcia's birthday on August 1 with two-for-one admission for visitors, free Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream and special raffles.
