NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAY SEASON WITH
NEWLY REDESIGNED NYHISTORY STORE & BRAND NEW COFFEE BAR

One-stop destination for history lovers adds Parliament Espresso and Coffee bar to its offerings

New York, NY, December 6, 2016 —The New-York Historical Society, the city’s oldest museum, welcomes visitors to its newly redesigned NYHistory Store—a destination shop for history lovers—and the brand new Parliament Espresso and Coffee bar. The NYHistory Store features a contemporary design and an expanded assortment of merchandise, providing New Yorkers with a unique destination for exceptional gifts exploring the themes of American history as well as New-York Historical’s landmark exhibitions just in time for holiday shopping.

Joining the NYHistory Store is Parliament Espresso and Coffee bar, Starr Catering Group’s new flagship store and its first brick-and-mortar espresso bar. The only coffee spot on Central Park West from 59th Street to 110th Street, Parliament serves its distinctive coffee along with daily house-made pastries and a variety of grab-and-go sandwiches and salads on a seasonally rotating menu.

“A visit to the New-York Historical Society wouldn’t be complete without spending time in our new NYHistory Store or sipping a cup of coffee at Parliament,” said Dr. Louise Mirrer, president and CEO of the New-York Historical Society. “The NYHistory Store serves as a haven for history lovers, offering our visitors an array of gifts, books, and other items centered on the people and places that have defined and shaped American history. We’re also thrilled to offer the neighborhood a new spot to socialize and recharge with Parliament Espresso and Coffee bar.”

Designed by Richard Philipps of the Orion Group Inc., the NYHistory Store features a selection of textiles, fine art prints, books, stationery, gifts, toys and games, jewelry, apparel, and accessories that echo and promote a deeper understanding of American history. Prints, stationery, and tabletop items showcase historic New York views and works of art from New-York Historical’s vast permanent collection, such as John James Audubon’s Birds of America. An assortment of merchandise also illustrates the contributions of history makers like Alexander Hamilton, while special items reflecting New-York Historical’s rotating exhibitions create a unique experience for visitors no matter how often they stop by.

As the home of one of the most preeminent collection of Tiffany lamps―soon to be displayed on New-York Historical’s transformed fourth floor―the NYHistory Store offers visitors a selection of Tiffany-inspired products, including silk scarves, serveware, personal accessories, stationery, jewelry, and other gifts. The important role of women in American history, to accompany the new Center for Women’s History, can be furthered explored through a variety of books, keepsakes, and other mementos.

To celebrate its reopening, the NYHistory Store has introduced a new tradition: an annual historical ornament that honors a specific person, place, or event from American history. The program kicks off this December 2016 with a selection of four ornaments that evoke iconic themes of the New-York Historical Society―Alexander Hamilton; two suffragists proudly wearing their Votes for Women sashes; a locomotive from the Holiday Express exhibition; and the Lincoln and Douglass statues that adorn the steps at New-York Historical. A new ornament will be introduced every year.

In addition to its coffee menu, Parliament Espresso and Coffee bar will offer salads and sandwiches, as well as pastries such as apple pear rye muffins, Eccles cakes, Bostock brioche, Financiers, bakery-style layer cakes, Palmiers, and cranberry orange scones. All coffee beans used in Parliament Coffee are sourced from Nicaragua, Brazil, and Sumatra. The new space was designed by Stokes Architecture with a bright, airy aesthetic that features salvaged pendant lights, marble counters, and a wooden stand-up bar. The coffee bar seats 20.

The NYHistory Store is located at 170 Central Park West (entrance on 77th Street) and is open Tuesdays  through Thursdays from 10 am – 6 pm, Fridays from 10 am – 8 pm, Saturdays from 10 am – 6 pm, and Sundays from 11 am – 5 pm.
