In his first major book event and his only New York stop in a national tour, former Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates delivers a behind-the-scenes account of his service under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama while the nation was embroiled in two difficult wars. The only secretary of defense to serve under both Republican and Democratic presidents, Secretary Gates vividly recounts the achievements and challenges of his tenure, from his battles with Congress, the presidents, and the military, to his efforts to turn the tide in Iraq, to his commitment to the American soldiers serving under him.
Robert M. Gates served as the 22nd United States Secretary of Defense in the administrations of Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama from 2006 to 2011. Prior to his roles as Secretary of Defense, Mr. Gates was President of Texas A&M University from 2002 to 2006 and served as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency under President George H.W. Bush from 1991 to 1993. He is the author of Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War. David Gregory (moderator) is the moderator of NBC's Meet the Press.
