Celebrate Madeline this 4th of July! Madeline in New York: The Art of Ludwig Bemelmans will feature a Madeline meet and greet, art projects, creative story times, a family audio guide for the exhibition, and much more. Get to know the creator of this beloved children’s character, who immigrated to New York 100 years ago and started writing Madeline in Pete's Tavern near Gramercy Park. Fans big and small can discover Ludwig Bemelmans and explore his artwork throughout the day. Families can also celebrate Independence Day, with American Revolution activities all day long.

Madeline in New York Family Audio Guide
10 am – 6 pm
Kids get an audio guide of their own to tour through the Madeline exhibition. Hear the story of how Mr. Bemelmans created Madeline, and meet new characters in his drawings like Noodle the Dog and Marina the Seal. Narrated by actor and director Terrence Mann, this audio guide is playful, informative, and cannot be missed!

Madeline Tattoos
10 am – 6 pm
Kids get Madeline on their arms with these temporary tattoos!

Meet and Greet with Madeline
11 am and 2 pm
Line up with Madeline! Madeline is out and about at the New-York Historical Society – find her in the galleries and snap a picture to take home.

Build the Eiffel Tower
11 am – 4 pm
Kids build up, up, up throughout the day to recreate this Parisian marvel of engineering.

Madeline and Friends Finger Puppets
11 am – 4 pm
Families decorate a Pepito, Genevieve, or Madeline finger puppet and then reenact their favorite scenes from the books.

Write-Your-Own Madeline Stories
Noon and 1 pm
Families rewrite the classics by swapping out nouns, verbs, and adjectives with very silly results.

Make sure to check out the Independence Day-themed activities!
