To celebrate our exhibition Beer Here: Brewing New York's History, the New-York Historical Society is hosting a series of Saturday beer tastings by local breweries in the exhibition's Beer Hall, run by Starr Restaurants Catering Group. The program will run from May 26 through August 25. Not only will visitors get to taste some of these local creations, but there will be hops, whole leaf flowers and other beer ingredients for people to touch, smell and experience. On August 10th, we are featuring a special Friday afternoon tasting at 4 pm with Shmaltz Brewing Company.
Beer at the Tasting
The tasting will feature: Coney Island Lager, a delectable alchemy of 8 malts, 6 hops, and Czech pilsner yeast; Mermaid Pilsner, a session pilsner with four spicy hops and seven golden malts; Albino Python, the world’s only White Lager; Sword Swallower, an IPA brewed with Lager Yeast, and Human Blockhead, a lager that is floral and creamy, with a heavy mouth-feel and light hop bitterness.
Shmaltz Brewing Company was established in 1996 by Jeremy Cowan. What began as a Chanukah experiment between Cowan and friends, developed into the launch of the award-winning line of HE'BREW Beers® with the production of 100 cases hand bottled, labeled and delivered to San Francisco Bay Area shelves out of the trunk of his Grandmother's Volvo. Now, HE'BREW Beer® is available in over 25 states at more than 1,500 retail and specialty shops. In the summer of 2008 Cowan launched a new line of craft brewed lagers under the Coney Island brand. The Coney Island Craft Lagers® were released in association with the arts organization Coney Island USA. A portion of its proceeds directly benefits Coney Island USA. Last year Shmaltz Brewing opened Coney Island Brewing Company - theWorld's Smallest Brewery – in Coney Island, NY. Shmaltz was named "Best American Craft Brewer" and won the "Best In Show 2010" title by Beverage World Magazine, after being named "Breakout Brand" for 2009.
