Family Programs Educator

JOB TITLE:  Family Programs Educator – Part-Time (Saturday Floor Manager, Early Childhood Focus)
DEPARTMENT:  DiMenna Children’s History Museum (DCHM) 
REPORTS TO:  Senior Manager of Family Programs        

New-York Historical Society, a preeminent educational and research institution, is home to both New York City’s oldest museum and to one of the nation’s most distinguished independent research libraries. N-YHS is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and public programs, and fostering research that reveal the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today. Founded in 1804, its holdings cover four centuries of American history, and include one of the world’s greatest collections of books, manuscripts, graphic materials, historical artifacts, and American art documenting the history of the United States as seen through the prism of New York.

The DiMenna Children’s History Museum opened in 2011 and offers family visitors a permanent exhibition (aimed at 7-14 year olds) and a broad range of New York and American history themed intergenerational family programs (for children as young as 18 months up through 14 year olds). 

The New-York Historical Society is seeking to hire a part-time Family Programs Educator to act as the Saturday Floor Manager for the galleries of the DiMenna Children’s History Museum; to lead birthday parties; and to teach other family programs as needed.

The position is part-time with 10 admin/floor managing hours per week ($18/hr) with additional teaching hours ($25/hr) on an as-needed basis. The educator will act as our Saturday Floor Manager every week (11 am-5 pm) and work an additional 5 admin hours on a regularly scheduled weekday.   


  • Overseeing DCHM gallery spaces on Saturdays, including tidying of the library and brochure rack; interacting with visitors; offering drop-in activities to families; etc.  
  • Assisting with additional Saturday family programs (author visits, special exhibition programming, drop-in crafts, etc.), holiday events (Halloween, President’s Day, July 4th, etc.), and DCHM Family Benefit as needed.
  • Leading and/or assisting during private birthday parties for children ages 4 – 13. This can include creating original content, directing supporting staff, prepping and organizing supplies, room set up, family interactions, working with groups of up to 30 children, and party clean up.
  • Being available to act as a substitute teacher for our suite of early childhood programs (Little New-Yorkers, Sunday Story Time, and Stroller Tours).
  • Providing administrative support to the Family Programs department.
  • Being available to work weekends and some holidays and have flexible remaining hours.


  • BA in related field
  • Regular Saturday availability
  • Ability to work independently and to take ownership over a program
  • Two plus years’ experience working with children and families, and with art making
  • Interest in New York and U.S. history
  • Flexibility and ability to work on some Sundays, holidays, and school vacation weeks
  • Experience working in a museum, a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

This position will require the employee to lift (up to 25 lbs), bend, stoop, walk, speak and stand for up to 6 hours in a day.
