What did the civil rights movement look like before the Civil War? In a time when America was made of both free states and slave states, the challenges facing African American activists were many as they fought not just for abolition but for equal citizenship. Historian Kate Masur explores this often unacknowledged period in the fight for civil rights, looking at the battles that laid the groundwork for the vision of Republicans’ rebuilding after the Civil War and the efforts of activists a century later.
