Living History @ Home: Celebrate Juneteenth!

Want to be creative and learn about history? Join us for a virtual Living History program series via Zoom with our Living History coordinator Cheyney McKnight as we explore the history and traditions of the Juneteenth celebrations. Living History @ Home: What is Juneteenth?
Wednesday, June 10 | 1-2 pm

Free; all ages

Discover Juneteenth, the annual celebration of the end of American chattel slavery on June 19, 1865, including the origins of the celebration, how it has changed over time, and the many local traditions connected with the holiday. Learn how to make a Juneteenth flag and other festive decorations!  

Materials needed: construction paper (preferably red, green, black), markers, tape, unsharpened pencil or other small wooden stick

Living History @ Home: Cooking for Juneteenth 
Wednesday, June 17, 2020 | 1 - 2 pm

Free; all ages  

Take a virtual field trip to King Manor Museum in Queens, NY, the former home of Rufus King, a signer of the Constitution and an antislavery politician. Living History coordinator Cheyney McKnight prepares a Juneteenth feast over a period-correct fire pit. Learn how to make Marcus Garvey salad, barbecue ribs, strawberry pie, and more with kid-friendly recipes.

1 can kidney beans (15 oz)

1 can black beans (15 oz)

½ to 1 lb fresh green beans trimmed

1 medium red onion diced

3-4 celery stalks diced

1 red bell pepper diced

¼ cup parsley chopped

2 to 3 cloves garlic minced

⅓ cup apple cider vinegar

¼ cup of olive oil

3 tablespoons sugar

Salt 

Black pepper

Juneteenth is here! Celebrate together and learn how to set your Juneteenth table, what to do with the decorations, and how to plate all of that delicious food. Then, settle in to learn songs traditionally sung at Juneteenth celebrations!
