New-York Historical Society, a preeminent educational and research institution, is home to both New York City’s oldest museum and to one of the nation’s most distinguished independent research libraries. N-YHS is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and public programs, and fostering research that reveal the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today. Founded in 1804, its holdings cover four centuries of American history, and include one of the world’s greatest collections of books, manuscripts, graphic materials, historical artifacts, and American art documenting the history of the United States as seen through the prism of New York.

JOB SUMMARY:
The New-York Historical Society is seeking part-time Citizenship Educators to lead government and history lessons for green card holders through the Citizenship Project. The Citizenship Project is a special initiative of N-YHS Education designed to help eligible permanent residents pass the civics test portion of the naturalization process through on-site and off-site classes.

Drawing on world-renowned collections and a staff of passionate professionals, N-YHS Education engages learners of all ages in the study of our collective past to deepen content knowledge, develop 21st century skills, and foster an empowered and engaged citizenry.  We believe in the power of authentic historical study to spark curiosity and creativity, to promote cultural understanding, and to strengthen our democracy. Citizenship Educators play a critical role in this work, bringing our thoughtful approach to American history to our city’s immigrant communities.

Citizenship Educators lead classes with prescribed lesson plans under the supervision of the Citizenship Project Manager. The approach to teaching and learning at the Historical Society is object-based inquiry, in which material culture provides a window into the past. All new Citizenship Educators undergo two full days of training in this approach before leading their first workshop, and all new and veteran educators participate in regularly-scheduled mandatory training sessions throughout the year.

Educators must be available to teach two weekday evenings and at least one weekend day. Courses are offered on weekday evenings (6-8pm) and weekends (10am-2pm offsite and 10am-4pm onsite).

All candidates must be available for three full days of training on Thursday September 5, Friday September 6, and Friday September 13.

EDUCATION:

  • Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in history, American Studies, and/or political science.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Candidates must be comfortable teaching adults.
  • Experience with adult English Language Learners (ELLs) strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of American history and government a plus.
  • Experience in museum education and/or teaching American history/civics is preferred. Interest and willingness to be trained in the New-York Historical Society’s approach to inquiry-based teaching is required.
  • Bilingual candidates, particularly Spanish speakers, are strongly encouraged to apply.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Educators will teach programs about American history and government to help permanent residents pass the USCIS Civics Test in classrooms at partner sites and in the New-York Historical Society classrooms and galleries.
  • Educators are expected to learn all programs by studying the provided program outlines and conducting additional research to ensure the effective delivery of content.
  • Educators will communicate with N-YHS administrative staff to ensure all programs are delivered in a timely fashion and meet expectations.
  • Educators will maintain accurate records of program delivery within personal calendars and Education Division booking system.
  • Prior to teaching, Educators will gather materials to conduct successful programs.
  • Educators will be responsible for day-of-program logistics.
  • Educators are required to attend trainings to learn institutional pedagogy and content.
  • Educators are required to complete and submit all required paperwork including program evaluations, attendance lists, and timesheets.

COMPENSATION:
$25/hour Museum Programs
$50/hour Offsite Programs
$18/hour Training and Preparation Time

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee with or without accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

This position will require the employee to lift (up to 25 lbs), bend, stoop, walk, speak and stand for up to 6 hours in a day.
