Richard Platt served throughout most of the Revolutionary War as aide-de-camp to General Alexander McDougall; afterward he remained in the regular army until his retirement in 1820. In this portrait Platt is shown wearing his military uniform, to which is pinned the badge of the Society of the Cincinnati, formed in 1784 by officers of the Continental Army who had fought in the War of Independence.
