This portrait, a gift to the Society from Poe's literary executor, was reportedly painted from life in 1845, the year Poe wrote "The Raven." In 1844 his wanderings from job to job had taken him to New York, where he became editor of the "Broadway Journal," and where Osgood painted his portrait. Poe knew Osgood's wife, who was a poet of some accomplishment.
