The Society received this portrait of Frances Osgood from the estate of Rufus W. Griswold, the critic and author, who was a member of the literary circle of New York to which Mrs. Osgood, a poet, belonged. The portrait was engraved by Robert Whitechurch for publication in C. D. Cleveland, "Compendium of American Literature" (1858, p. 600).
