General McClellan, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, commanded the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. Despite his military expertise, his lack of confidence and hesitation cost the Union several likely victories and he was relieved of his command by President Lincoln in the fall of 1862.
