The subject was the younger son of Nicholas William Stuyvesant (1648-98) and Elizabeth (Van Slichtenhorst) Stuyvesant, and the grandson of Governor Peter Stuyvesant. Gerardus Stuyvesant was first elected an alderman of New York in 1722 and served in that position and as deputy mayor and on numerous city council committees for many years thereafter. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his great-great-grandson.
