Gallery Label 
A native of New York, the subject was a descendant of Abraham Verplanck who immigrated to New Amsterdam about 1635. After graduating from Columbia in 1801 he studied law and established his practice in his native city. He was elected to the state assembly in 1820, 1821, and 1822, and to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1824. He remained active in politics until 1841 when he retired to the family estate at Fishkill. He was vice-president of N-YHS from 1868 until his death.
