Lieutenant Gray was the son of the artist, Henry Peters Gray. At the age of nineteen he enlisted in the Union army and was commissioned a first lieutenant and adjutant in 1864. He is depicted in the uniform of the Civil War, with broad-brimmed hat, his sword in his left hand, and shoulder straps that indicate his rank.
