The subject was born in West Granville, New York, the eldest son of Colonel Duty Shumway and Eunice (Kinney) Shumway. He graduated from Union College and studied law with his uncle Horatio Shumway in Buffalo. After practicing for a while in West Granville he moved to Chicago where he built up a lucrative business.
