Professor Greenwood was born in Boston, the son of Samuel, a prosperous merchant, and Elizabeth (Bronsdon) Greenwood. He graduated from Harvard in 1721 and thereafter studied theology in England. Returning to Massachusetts he was appointed the first Hollis Professor of Mathematics at Harvard in 1727.
