The subject, a noted landscape architect, was born in Winterthur, near Zurich, Switzerland. He came to the United States in 1861. In 1870 he established his office in New York and later worked with Frederick Law Olmsted, the architect of Central Park. He was the author of "Beautifying Country Homes; A Handbook of Landscape Gardening" (1870) and "Modern Cemeteries" (1888). Marguerite Weidenman, the artist and donor, was his daughter.
