James Lenox was the son of Robert and Rachel (Carmer) Lenox of New York. He was educated at Columbia College (A.B., 1818) and admitted to the bar in 1822. He was an avid bibliophile whose distinguished library was combined with the Astor and Tilden libraries in 1895 to form the New York Public Library.
