A native of Chestertown, Maryland, Nicholson served in the Continental Navy. Thereafter, he played an active role in New York politics, and from 1801 to 1804 was U.S. commissioner of loans in New York City. The subject wears his military uniform, bearing the badge of the Society of the Cincinnati, which was founded in 1784.
