The subject was the son of Joel Brownson of Vermont. After practicing law for several years in St. Martinsville, Louisiana, he returned north and spent the last years of his life in Brooklyn and Oyster Bay. This portrait was probably painted in the artist's studio at 3 Laight Street in New York. It was given as a gift to the Society by the sitter's grandson.
