The son of Robert Gillies of Scotland, John Gillies lived and worked in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia before moving to Charlestown, Massachusetts. By profession he was a shipbuilder. He later settled in New York. This miniature, a gift to the Society from the subject's grandson, was copied from an earlier miniature or photograph by Theodore Wust.
Due to ongoing research, information about this object is subject to change.
