Birmelin's method of combining bits of figures and sections of the built environment, all pushing toward the picture plane, effectively portrays the crowded New York City streetscape very much as one views it walking through an ordinary busy Manhattan street. He frequently sketches the individual elements -- in this instance, a nose, a hand thrusting toward the viewer -- as he walks his daily route from Port Authority along 8th or 10th Ave. to his 14th Street studio.
