Description 
Cast and wrought silver loving cup; urn-shaped body with an applied, molded midband and an applied egg and dart rim; body seated on a circular splayed foot with an egg and dart footring and body joint; body engraved, between the handles, "Hugh J. Grant./ 1858/ Sept. 10th../ 1897./ Connell/ Brady/ Olcott/ Bailey" in script; three cast double-scroll handles with feathered sides and double-oval body joints; scalloped band applied around the interior of the rim; gilt interior; makers' marks stamped on the base.

Hugh J. Grant (1852-1910), a Tammany Hall politician, served as mayor of New York City, from 1889 to 1892. In 1885, he was elected sheriff in Tammany's sweep of county offices. By 1897, he was completely out of politics.
