Charles Théodore Frère was a masterful colorist who won the admiration of Impressionist painters like Monet. He traveled widely in the East and established a permanent studio in Cairo, where he painted Orientalist landscapes, cityscapes, and interiors to exhibit at the annual Paris Salons and sell to collectors. This vibrant market scene contrasts the vivid colors of the men’s robes and turbans with the earth tones of the surrounding buildings.
