The subject was the daughter of Richard and Sarah Elizabeth (Hays) Hammond, and the sister of John Hays Hammond, the noted geologist and mining engineer of the later 19th and early 20th centuries. Miss Hammond herself was a Spanish scholar, a translator of the works of Lope de Vega, and a contributor to the "Atlantic Monthly" and other magazines. Her portrait was a gift to the Society from the niece of the artist.
