The subject was the daughter of Moses Augustus Field and Frances Field and granddaughter of Moses and Mary Pearsall (Bradhurst) Field. Her father was a wholesale druggist and a prominent New York businessman. She was born in New York and was the great-granddaughter of Samuel Osgood, first postmaster general of the United States. She was married to Henry Wilmerding Payne (d. 1926) in 1901.
