Gallery Label: 
Olivia Eggleston of Hartford, Connecticut, met Anson Phelps when he was establishing in that city the foundation of his industrial fortune. There were married in Hartford but lived in New York after 1815. One of the subject's daughters married Daniel James, and the companion portraits of Anson and Olivia Phelps passed down through the family until the James Foundation presented them to the Society in 1959.
