Anna Lewis Phillips was the great-granddaughter of the Rev. George Phillips and the daughter of Jonas Phillips of Morristown, New Jersey. In 1784 she was married to Major Daniel Phoenix (1761-1828), a prominent citizen of Long Island who settled in Morristown during the British occupation of Long Island. He subsequently moved to New York and held various important civil posts including that of city treasurer.
