Sarah Birdsall Otis was born in Bellport, Long Island, the daughter of James and Mary Adelia (Ludlum) Otis. She was an active campaigner for women's suffrage and long associated with Girl Scouts of America; she served as president of the latter organization from 1930 until 1935. Her husband, Frederick Edey, was a member of the New York Stock Exchange.
