Augusta Emma Simmons, the daughter of Peabody and Salome (Sprague) Simmons, was born in Waldoboro, Maine. She married Captain Frederick J. Stetson, a shipbuilder, in 1864. In the 1880s she became interested in the work of Mary Baker Eddy who sent her to New York in 1886. Mrs. Stetson organized the First Church of Christ Scientist in the city and served as its pastor until 1909, in which year she was excommunicated from the sect on doctrinal and moral charges at the instigation of Mrs. Eddy.
