The details of the bonnet and dress are virtually identical to the 1795 protrait by the elder Peale, but the features have been softened slightly, perhaps under the influence of Gilbert Stuart's popular portrait of Martha Washington which Rembrant Peale certainly would have known from the original and subsequent replicas.

Rembrandt Peale based this portrait, which was conceived as a companion to his own "porthole" portrait of Washington, on his father's 1795 likeness of Mrs. Washington (now in Independence Hall, Philadelphia). The Society's portrait is one of Rembrandt's later replicas.
