Emma Eames was born of American parents in Shanghai, China. She studied voice in Boston and Paris and made her debut with the Paris Opera in 1889. She sang with Metropolitan Opera Company in New York from 1891 to 1909 and came to be recognized as one of the foremost sopranos of the period. She was married to Julian R. Story (1857-1919) in 1891 and divorced in 1907. Four years later she married Emilio de Gogorza (d. 1949), a baritone with the Metropolitan Opera Company, from whom later separated.
