Catharine Ten Eyck, the second wife of Wynant Van Zandt, was the daughter of Tobias and Elizabeth (Hegeman) Ten Eyck. According to family tradition the Society's portraits of the Van Zandts were originally full-length portraits, which at some point were cut down to their present size. Mrs. Van Zandt holds in her hand a tulip, said to have been grown from a bulb imported from Holland at a cost of $100. She is clearly a woman of substantial means by the standards of early 18th-century New York.
