The Hindu religious reformer and scholar Rammohun Roy grew up in British-ruled India. In 1814 he founded in Calcutta a spiritual society that led to a new formulation of Hindu theism; he denounced Hinduism as old and outmoded, attacking its caste system, worship of idols, and animal sacrifices. He also sought for Indians greater freedom, better education, and technological advancement. His portrait was painted in London by Rembrandt Peale some six weeks before his death.
