Designed and published by Isaac F. Wood and engraved by George Hampden Lovett, this medal is a satire on the unfinished Washington Monument: "First in War and in Peace, Last in Securing a Monument." This medal was struck in 1875, but Wood and Lovett had to wait nine more years, until 1884, before the obelisk was completed. These medals were distributed on July 3, 1875, the centenary of Washington's assumption of command of the Continental army before Boston.
